Synopsis:
Two Russian refugees, Prince Mikail Alexandrovitch Ouratieff and Grand Duchess Tatiana Petrovna, have just barely escaped with their lives after the assassination of the Romanovs, their lives and four billion francs, the late Tsar's entire fortune in gold that has been entrusted to them and is to be used only at such time as they deem it of most value to the reclaiming of their beloved Motherland.
Now living in 1930s Paris and refusing to spend even a sou on themselves, and suffering under the most abject poverty, they find themselves the objects of relentless pressure, from bankers, foreign governments, and even pretenders to the empty throne of Russia, to divest themselves of their fabulous wealth.
Instead, they decide to disguise themselves as servants and take positions in the home of a wealthy French banker, his wife, and their terribly sheltered and spoiled children.
Inevitably, they are serving at a dinner party when they are confronted by a series of guests who recognize them from their former lives as royalty, and by one guest in particular, their former torturer, a Russian commissar by the name of Gorotchenko.
The play was an enormous hit in Europe between the World Wars, eventually gaining great success both on the stage and in film after being brought to the United States.
The cast features Will Alexander, fresh from his role as Captain Marko in The Manchurian Candidate, as Prince Oratieff; Michelle Reider as Grand Duchess Tatiana; and David Oswald as Gorotchenko.
Pamela Wallace, Tom Harrison, Nancy Mikkelsen, Becky Stone, Sharon Ferry, Rebekah Hawk, Alexandra Racines and David Scheffler round out the cast, with Mr. Harrison and Ms Ferry playing a variety of roles.
